Pristina is a young and lively capital, where a large share of the population is under thirty and the café culture is famous across the Balkans. Its sights are a mix of Ottoman mosques, socialist-era architecture and monuments to the country's recent history.

Mother Teresa Boulevard

Mother Teresa Boulevard, a long pedestrian avenue, is the heart of the city, lined with cafés and shops and busy from morning to night. At one end stands the Newborn monument, giant letters unveiled in 2008 and repainted with a new design every year.

Nearby are the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, whose bell tower can be climbed, and the National Library, a building of white domes covered in a metal lattice that is often called one of the most unusual in the world.

The old town

The small old town around the Imperial Mosque, built in 1461, also holds the clock tower and the Ethnographic Museum, set in an 18th-century Ottoman house. The Gračanica Monastery, a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox masterpiece and UNESCO site, is a short drive away.
