Nakuru, Kenya's fourth-largest city, lies in the Great Rift Valley next to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for flamingos and as a sanctuary for black and white rhinos.

The park

Lake Nakuru National Park has rhinos, lions, giraffes and buffalo, and the lakeshore is often pink with flamingos. Baboon Cliff offers a view over the lake.

The city

Nakuru is a busy Rift Valley city. Menengai Crater, one of the largest volcanic craters in the world, rises just north of town.

Good to know

Lake Nakuru National Park is about three hours from Nairobi by road and can be visited on a day trip or as part of a longer safari. The park is fenced and is one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhinos. The number of flamingos varies from year to year, depending on water levels. Nakuru town has grown into one of Kenya's largest cities, with markets and a lively center.
