Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, is a popular escape from Nairobi with hippos, birds and walking safaris among giraffes and zebras.

The lake

Boat rides on the lake pass hippos and fish eagles. On Crescent Island you can walk among giraffes, zebras and wildebeest.

Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate National Park, with cliffs and a gorge, can be explored by bicycle. Its landscapes inspired scenes in The Lion King.

A day in Naivasha

Start with a boat ride on Lake Naivasha to see hippos and fish eagles, then cross to Crescent Island for a walking safari among giraffes, zebras and waterbuck. In the afternoon, rent a bicycle and ride through Hell's Gate National Park, past towering cliffs and the Fischer's Tower rock, and walk into the gorge with a guide. Lake Naivasha is about two hours from Nairobi, and the road down the Rift Valley escarpment offers a spectacular viewpoint.
