Würzburg, in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, is a baroque city on the River Main surrounded by vineyards. It is the starting point of the Romantic Road and home to the Würzburg Residence, one of the most magnificent palaces in Europe, while its old bridge is the perfect place for a glass of local wine at sunset.
The Residence
The Würzburg Residence, built in the 18th century for the prince-bishops, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its grand staircase is covered by the largest ceiling fresco in the world, painted by the Venetian artist Tiepolo, and its Court Garden and chapel are just as lavish.
The bridge and the fortress
The Old Main Bridge, lined with statues of saints, crosses the river below the Marienberg Fortress, which sits on a vineyard-covered hill. Wine bars along the bridge sell glasses of Franconian wine, and drinking a Brückenschoppen on the bridge is a local tradition. Würzburg Cathedral and the Marienkapelle stand in the old town.
A classic walk through Würzburg
Start at the Residence and its gardens, then walk west along Hofstraße to the cathedral and on to the Market Square with the Marienkapelle. Continue to the Old Main Bridge.
Cross the bridge and climb the path through the vineyards to Marienberg Fortress for a view over the whole city. The walk is about 4 kilometers.
Visiting tips
Würzburg is about an hour from Frankfurt and Nuremberg by train. Wine festivals take place in spring and summer. The Romantic Road continues south to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and on to Füssen in the Alps.
