Berlin is a city shaped by the 20th century: once divided by the Wall, it is now one of Europe's most creative and open capitals. Grand avenues, world-class museums and memorials stand next to graffiti-covered courtyards, parks and an endless choice of cafés and clubs.

Mitte: the historic center

The Brandenburg Gate, once trapped in the no man's land between East and West, is now the symbol of a reunited Germany. Nearby stand the Reichstag, with its glass dome open to visitors, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a field of 2,711 concrete blocks.

The boulevard Unter den Linden leads east to Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five major museums, including the Pergamon and the Neues Museum, home of the bust of Nefertiti. Beyond the Berlin Cathedral lies Alexanderplatz and its TV Tower, the tallest structure in Germany.

The Wall and the neighborhoods

The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse shows how the border worked, while the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving section, is covered with famous murals. Checkpoint Charlie, the former border crossing, is now a museum and a busy tourist spot.

Berlin is a city of neighborhoods, or Kieze. Kreuzberg and Neukölln are multicultural and full of bars and markets, Prenzlauer Berg has leafy streets and cafés, and Charlottenburg in the west has the baroque Charlottenburg Palace and the elegant Kurfürstendamm.

Visiting tips

Berlin is spread out, but the U-Bahn and S-Bahn make it easy to get around. Book the Reichstag dome in advance, it's free. Tempelhof, a former airport turned into a huge park, is a unique place for a Sunday walk or bike ride.
