Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, was the capital of ancient Colchis, the land of the Golden Fleece in Greek myth, and later of the united Georgian kingdom. Today it is a relaxed city on the Rioni river and a base for exploring caves, canyons and monasteries.

The city center

The central square is decorated with the Colchis Fountain, its golden figures copied from ancient jewelry. The Green Bazaar is one of the liveliest markets in Georgia, and the Bagrati Cathedral, built in the 11th century, stands on a hill above the river.

Around Kutaisi

Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO site founded by King David the Builder in 1106, has superb mosaics and frescoes. Nearby are the Prometheus Cave, with underground lakes and stalactites, and the Martvili and Okatse canyons, with turquoise rivers and hanging walkways. Kutaisi's airport is a popular gateway for budget flights to Georgia.
