Batumi, on the Black Sea near the Turkish border, is Georgia's summer capital. Its seaside boulevard, palm trees and unusual modern buildings stand beside a charming old town, with green mountains rising just behind.

The Boulevard and the seafront

Batumi Boulevard runs for several kilometers along the pebble beach, with gardens, fountains and cycle lanes. At its end, the moving steel sculpture 'Ali and Nino' shows two lovers who slowly glide together and apart, and the Alphabet Tower displays the letters of the Georgian script.

The old town

The old town is full of restored 19th-century buildings, cafés and wine bars. Europe Square, with a statue of Medea holding the Golden Fleece, and Piazza, an Italian-style square with a clock tower, are its centerpieces.

The Batumi Botanical Garden, on a hillside above the sea just north of the city, is one of the largest in the former Soviet Union.
