A day in Telč

Telč is a small Renaissance town in southern Moravia whose long main square is lined with colorful, gabled houses with arcades, each one different. The whole square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it looks like a painting.

At one end, the chateau has richly decorated halls and gardens. Paths lead around the ponds that surround the town, offering views back to the towers and roofs.

Good to know

Telč is quiet and peaceful, perfect for a relaxed stop between Prague and Vienna or Brno.

Visit in the early morning or evening, when the light on the facades is best.

Why it is so special

According to legend, after a great fire in the 16th century, the lord of Telč had the town rebuilt in the Italian Renaissance style he admired on his travels, which is why the square looks so harmonious. Each house has its own facade, some with sgraffito decoration, some with stepped or curved gables, painted in pastel yellow, pink, green and blue.

Telč sits on a narrow strip of land between ponds, and paths around the water make for an easy hour-long walk with constantly changing views of the town. The Holy Spirit Church tower can be climbed for a view of the square from above. In August, the town hosts a popular music festival in its courtyards and churches.
