Trogir is a small medieval town on an island between the mainland and the larger island of Čiovo, connected by bridges on both sides. Its compact old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved Romanesque and Renaissance towns in Central Europe.
The old town
Trogir's lanes are so narrow and twisting that the whole town feels like an open-air museum. The main square is dominated by the Cathedral of St Lawrence, whose Romanesque portal, carved by Master Radovan in 1240, shows Adam and Eve, saints and scenes of daily life. Climb the bell tower for views over the rooftops.
Opposite the cathedral, the town hall, the city loggia and the clock tower complete one of the finest squares in Dalmatia.
The waterfront and the fortress
The Riva, the seafront promenade on the southern side, is lined with palm trees, cafés and yachts. At its western end, the 15th-century Kamerlengo Fortress was built by the Venetians, and its walls offer views over the town and the channel. Concerts and film screenings take place inside in summer.
The Čiovo island across the bridge has beaches and quiet bays, and boats run from Trogir to the Blue Lagoon and nearby islands.
Visiting tips
Trogir is just 30 minutes from Split and close to Split Airport, making it an easy first or last stop. The old town is small enough to explore in a few hours, but it's lovely to stay overnight and enjoy it after the day-trippers leave.
