Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful walled cities in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of marble streets, baroque churches and red roofs enclosed by massive stone walls above the Adriatic. For centuries it was the center of the independent Republic of Ragusa, a rival of Venice.
The old town and the walls
The Stradun, the main street, is paved with limestone polished smooth by centuries of footsteps. It runs from the Pile Gate to the old harbor, past the Onofrio Fountain, the Franciscan Monastery with one of the oldest working pharmacies in Europe, the Sponza Palace and the Rector's Palace.
Walking the city walls, nearly two kilometers around the old town, is the highlight of a visit. The views over the rooftops and the sea are spectacular, and the Minčeta Tower is the highest point. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize many places used as King's Landing.
Beyond the walls
A cable car climbs Mount Srđ for a panoramic view of the city and the islands. Lokrum, a green island a short boat ride away, has botanical gardens, peacocks and rocky swimming spots. Banje beach, just outside the eastern gate, has a classic view back to the old town.
The Fort Lovrijenac stands on a rock outside the walls and hosts theater performances during the summer festival. The Elaphiti Islands and the town of Ston, with its long medieval walls and oyster farms, make good day trips.
Visiting tips
Dubrovnik is very crowded in summer, especially when cruise ships are in port. Walk the walls early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The Dubrovnik Pass includes the walls and several museums. The Summer Festival in July and August brings concerts and theater to the old town.
