Salento, in Colombia's coffee region, is a colorful mountain town of balconied houses and the gateway to the Cocora Valley, home of the world's tallest palm trees.

The town

Calle Real is lined with colorful houses and craft shops, leading to a viewpoint over the valley. Willys jeeps carry visitors to the Cocora Valley.

Cocora and coffee

The Cocora Valley is famous for wax palms up to 60 meters tall. Coffee farms nearby offer tours from plant to cup.

A day in Salento

Take a Willys jeep to the Cocora Valley, where wax palms, the tallest palms in the world, rise from green hills. A loop hike of about five hours leads through cloud forest and back through the palms.

In the afternoon, visit a coffee farm and learn how coffee is grown and roasted.

Good to know

Salento is in the Coffee Triangle, a UNESCO site. Try tejo, a traditional game with gunpowder.

Bring a rain jacket, as it often rains in the afternoon.

Why people love it

Salento is one of the oldest towns in the Quindío region, and its main street, Calle Real, is lined with houses with brightly painted doors, balconies and windows, now home to craft shops and cafés. At the end of the street, steps lead up to the Alto de la Cruz viewpoint, with views over the green Cocora Valley. The town has a relaxed atmosphere and is a favorite with backpackers. Coffee tours at small family farms are a highlight, where you follow the bean from the plant to the cup.
