Mostar is named after the 'bridge keepers' who guarded its famous Old Bridge, a graceful stone arch built by the Ottomans in 1566 over the green waters of the Neretva. Destroyed in 1993 during the war and rebuilt with the original techniques, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of reconciliation.

The Old Bridge

Stari Most, the Old Bridge, rises steeply over the river between two stone towers. In summer, members of the local divers' club leap from its top, more than 20 meters down into the cold water, a tradition that goes back centuries, and an annual diving competition draws big crowds.

The old town

On both sides of the bridge, the cobbled Kujundžiluk bazaar is lined with shops selling copper, carpets and souvenirs. The minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque offers the classic view of the bridge.

The Kravica waterfalls, the dervish house of Blagaj at the source of the Buna river and the hilltop village of Počitelj are easy day trips. Mostar is about two and a half hours from Sarajevo by a scenic train.
