Banja Luka, the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is known for its tree-lined avenues, parks and the clear Vrbas river that flows through it. It is a relaxed city with a lively café culture and easy access to rafting in the canyons upstream.

The center and the river

Gospodska Street, the pedestrian main street, runs past the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, rebuilt in red and yellow stone, and the Palace of the Republic. The Ferhadija Mosque, a 16th-century masterpiece destroyed in 1993, has been carefully rebuilt using many of its original stones.

On the Vrbas river, the Kastel Fortress has walls dating back to Roman times and hosts summer concerts. Further upstream, traditional flat-bottomed boats called dajak boats are still used on the river.
