Yerevan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. Its center was rebuilt in the 20th century in pink and orange volcanic tuff stone, earning it the name 'the pink city', and on clear days the snowy peak of Mount Ararat towers over it.

Republic Square and the center

Republic Square, an oval of grand pink-stone buildings including the History Museum and the government house, is the heart of the city. On summer evenings its 'singing fountains' dance to music. From here, Northern Avenue, a pedestrian boulevard, leads to the Opera House.

The Cascade and views

The Cascade is a giant white stairway climbing a hillside, with terraces of fountains, gardens and modern sculptures, including several by Fernando Botero. The top gives a panoramic view over the city to Mount Ararat.

On weekends, the Vernissage open-air market sells carpets, crafts and Soviet souvenirs. The Matenadaran holds one of the world's richest collections of ancient manuscripts, and the Genocide Memorial on Tsitsernakaberd hill commemorates the victims of 1915.

Around Yerevan

The Greco-Roman temple of Garni, the cave monastery of Geghard and the monastery of Khor Virap, with the closest view of Ararat, are all easy day trips. Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, is an hour away.
