Rosario, on the Paraná River, is Argentina's third-largest city. It is where the national flag was first raised, and the hometown of Che Guevara and Lionel Messi.

The city

The National Flag Memorial, a huge monument by the river, has a tower with views. The pedestrian streets Córdoba and San Martín are lined with shops and early 20th-century buildings.

The river

The riverfront has parks, beaches and bars. Boats cross to the islands of the Paraná delta for picnics and beaches.

Good to know

Rosario is the birthplace of Lionel Messi and Che Guevara. It is about three hours from Buenos Aires.

The city has a lively cultural scene and nightlife.

The river and the city

Rosario lies on the banks of the Paraná, one of the great rivers of South America, and life here turns toward the water. The Costanera is a long string of parks, bike paths, old grain warehouses turned into cultural centers and riverside bars. In summer, small boats take people across to the islands opposite the city, where sandy beaches and simple restaurants make it feel like a holiday island. The city center has fine early 20th-century buildings, and the Bulevar Oroño is lined with old mansions and palm trees.
