Beyoğlu walking tour & neighborhood guide
Istiklal Avenue, Galata Tower and Istanbul's nightlife.
More Istanbul neighborhoods
Across the Golden Horn from the old city, Beyoğlu is the European, modern face of Istanbul. In the 19th century, as Pera, it was home to embassies, merchants and grand hotels, and today its long pedestrian avenue, steep lanes, galleries and rooftop bars make it the city's center of culture and nightlife.
Istiklal Avenue and Taksim
Istiklal Avenue, about one and a half kilometers long, runs from Taksim Square down to Tünel, and on a busy day hundreds of thousands of people walk along it. A red nostalgic tram rattles through the crowds past 19th-century buildings, churches, cinemas, bookshops and arcades such as the Çiçek Pasajı, the old flower passage.
The side streets are just as interesting. The Pera Museum shows Orientalist paintings, including the famous Tortoise Trainer, and Galatasaray High School, founded in 1481, stands behind its iron gates. At the bottom of the avenue, the Tünel funicular, opened in 1875, is one of the oldest underground railways in the world.
Galata, Karaköy and Cihangir
The Galata Tower, built by the Genoese in 1348, rises above the lanes of Galata, with a panoramic balcony looking over the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the old city. The steep streets around it, such as the Kamondo Steps and Serdar-ı Ekrem Street, are full of cafés, design shops and music stores.
Down by the water, Karaköy has turned old warehouses and banks into galleries, cafés and the Istanbul Modern art museum, next to the Galataport cruise terminal and its waterfront promenade. Uphill, Cihangir is a bohemian neighborhood of cats, antique shops and terraces with Bosphorus views.
A classic walk in Beyoğlu
Start at Taksim Square and walk the full length of Istiklal Avenue, stepping into the passages along the way. At Tünel, continue downhill to the Galata Tower, then take the Kamondo Steps down to Karaköy and finish on the waterfront at Galataport or on the Galata Bridge at sunset.
The walk is mostly downhill if you start at Taksim. Istiklal is busiest on weekend evenings, and the lanes around it are full of bars and live music until late.
