Grindelwald is a classic Swiss mountain village in the Jungfrau region, surrounded by green meadows and wooden chalets beneath the dramatic north face of the Eiger. It is one of the most beautiful places in the Alps for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
The village and the Eiger
The village stretches along a sunny valley, its main street lined with hotels, shops and restaurants, all with views of the Eiger, Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. The north face of the Eiger, nearly 1,800 meters of rock and ice, is one of the most famous climbing walls in the world.
Cows with bells graze on the meadows in summer, and the sound of the bells is part of the experience. The Grindelwald Glacier Canyon lets you walk along a gorge carved by the glacier.
Grindelwald First and beyond
A gondola climbs to Grindelwald First, where the Cliff Walk, a metal walkway, hangs off the side of the mountain. From First, an easy hike leads to the Bachalpsee, a lake that reflects the snowy peaks. On the way down you can ride a mountain cart, a trotti bike or a zipline.
The new Eiger Express cable car connects Grindelwald to the Eiger Glacier station, from where trains continue to the Jungfraujoch. In winter, the slopes of First and the Kleine Scheidegg area offer excellent skiing and sledging.
Visiting tips
Grindelwald is about 35 minutes by train from Interlaken, and the train journey is part of the fun. The village gets busy in summer, so book accommodation early. The weather in the mountains changes fast, so check the forecast and bring warm layers.
