Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and economic capital, a modern, fast-paced Atlantic port. It is less about ancient medinas and more about Art Deco boulevards, a seafront Corniche, and one of the largest mosques in the world, built right on the edge of the ocean.
The Hassan II Mosque
The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, stands on a platform over the Atlantic Ocean. Its minaret, over 200 meters tall, is one of the tallest in the world. Inside, the prayer hall can hold 25,000 worshippers, with a retractable roof and a glass floor section over the sea. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims on guided tours.
Art Deco and the city
In the early 20th century, Casablanca was a laboratory for French architects, and the downtown streets around Boulevard Mohammed V and the Place Mohammed V are full of Art Deco and neo-Moorish buildings. The Habous Quarter, a 'new medina' built in the 1930s, has arcades, bookshops and olive sellers.
The Corniche, in the Ain Diab district, is a long seafront promenade with beach clubs, cafés and sunset views. The upscale Anfa district has villas and modern shopping streets.
Visiting tips
Casablanca's Mohammed V airport is Morocco's main international gateway. High-speed trains, the fastest in Africa, link the city to Rabat and Tangier. The modern tram is an easy way to cross the city.
