Monte Carlo is the most famous district of Monaco, synonymous with luxury since its casino opened in the 1860s. Its streets of grand hotels and boutiques, its harbor of superyachts and the hairpin bends of the Grand Prix circuit make it one of the most glamorous places in Europe.
The Casino and Place du Casino
The Monte Carlo Casino, designed by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera, stands on a square of gardens and palm trees, surrounded by the Hôtel de Paris and the Café de Paris. In the evening, supercars line up in front and crowds gather to watch.
Port Hercule and the Grand Prix
Port Hercule, the main harbor, is filled with some of the largest yachts in the world. The streets around it become the circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix every May, and you can walk the famous route through the tunnel and the Fairmont hairpin any day of the year.
Monaco-Ville, the Rock
On a rocky headland across the harbor, Monaco-Ville is the old town, with the Prince's Palace, where the changing of the guard takes place every day just before noon, the cathedral where Grace Kelly is buried, and the Oceanographic Museum, built into the cliff above the sea.
Monaco is easy to reach by train from Nice in about 20 minutes, and public elevators and escalators help with its steep streets.
