Chișinău is one of the greenest capitals in Europe, with wide boulevards and large parks. Its center mixes 19th-century buildings, Orthodox churches and monumental Soviet architecture, and it is the starting point for visits to Moldova's famous wineries.

Stefan cel Mare Boulevard and the Cathedral Park

Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, the main avenue, runs through the center past government buildings, theaters and shops. On it, the Cathedral Park holds the Nativity Cathedral, its bell tower and a Triumphal Arch built in 1840 to celebrate a Russian victory over the Ottomans.

Across the boulevard, the Stefan cel Mare Park, the oldest in the city, is a favorite meeting place, with a statue of the medieval prince and an alley of busts of Romanian writers.

Markets, parks and wine

The Central Market, Piața Centrală, is a huge, lively bazaar of produce, cheese and homemade wine. Valea Morilor Park, with a lake and a monumental cascade of stairs, is a popular place to walk.

The wine cellars of Cricova and Mileștii Mici, just outside the city, are underground towns with tens of kilometers of streets lined with bottles; Mileștii Mici holds the world record for the largest wine collection.
