Cancún is Mexico's most famous beach destination, on the northeastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula. Its long Hotel Zone stretches along a narrow strip of land between the turquoise Caribbean Sea and a calm lagoon, and it is the gateway to the Mayan ruins, cenotes and islands of the region.
The Hotel Zone and downtown
The Zona Hotelera is shaped like the number 7, about 22 kilometers long, with resorts, beaches, shopping malls and nightlife. Public beaches such as Playa Delfines, with its colorful Cancún sign, have soft white sand that stays cool underfoot because it is made of crushed coral and limestone.
Downtown Cancún, known as El Centro, is where local life happens. Parque de las Palapas fills with families and food stalls in the evening, and the Mercado 28 sells handicrafts and souvenirs.
Islands, reefs and ruins
Ferries cross to Isla Mujeres, a laid-back island with golf carts, colorful streets and Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico. The MUSA underwater museum has hundreds of sculptures on the seabed that can be seen while snorkeling or diving.
Within reach of Cancún are Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the walled ruins of Tulum, the island of Holbox and countless cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with clear water.
Visiting tips
The dry season from December to April is the most popular time to visit. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and seaweed (sargassum) can affect the beaches in summer. Public buses along the Hotel Zone are cheap and frequent.
