Sliema and St Julian's form Malta's busiest seaside area, a long promenade of hotels, apartments and cafés facing the sea and the skyline of Valletta. By day it is a place for swimming off the rocks and strolling the waterfront; by night, Paceville in St Julian's is the island's nightlife center.

The Sliema promenade

The Tower Road promenade runs for several kilometers along Sliema's rocky shore, where locals swim from flat limestone ledges in summer. On the harbor side, the Strand faces Manoel Island and Valletta's walls, with ferries leaving for the capital every half hour and boats to the islands of Comino and Gozo.

Balluta Bay and Spinola Bay

The promenade continues to Balluta Bay, with its neo-Gothic church and Art Nouveau apartment building, and to the picturesque Spinola Bay in St Julian's, where traditional painted fishing boats float in front of waterfront restaurants.

Beyond it, Paceville is packed with clubs and bars, while St George's Bay has one of the few sandy beaches in this part of the island.
