Luxembourg City is built on a rocky plateau above the valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. Its upper old town of squares, palaces and banks contrasts with the Grund, a picturesque riverside quarter far below, and the views between them are some of the most dramatic of any European capital.
The old town
Place Guillaume II, known as the Knuedler, and Place d'Armes are the main squares of the old town, surrounded by cafés and hosting markets and concerts. The Grand Ducal Palace, with its Renaissance facade, is the official residence of the Grand Duke, and the Notre-Dame Cathedral holds the tombs of the royal family.
The Corniche, the Bock and the Grund
The Chemin de la Corniche, often called the most beautiful balcony in Europe, runs along the old ramparts with views down into the Alzette valley. The Bock Casemates, a network of tunnels cut into the rock to defend the fortress, can be explored.
Below, the Grund quarter has stone houses, a medieval abbey and pubs along the river, and a public elevator connects it to the upper town. The Adolphe Bridge spans the Pétrusse valley to the train station.
Practical tips
Public transport across the whole country is free. The modern Kirchberg plateau, linked by tram and the red Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, holds the European institutions and the Philharmonie concert hall.
