Klaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport, a city with a German past as Memel and an Old Town of half-timbered houses. It is also the gateway to the Curonian Spit, a narrow strip of giant sand dunes and pine forest that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Old Town and the river
Theatre Square, the heart of the Old Town, is home to the Ännchen von Tharau fountain and the theater where Hitler made a speech in 1939. Around it are half-timbered warehouses and quiet cobbled streets, many decorated with small sculptures such as the 'Black Ghost' rising from the water.
The Danė river, lined with yachts and the old sailing ship Meridianas, runs through the center, and the remains of Klaipėda Castle hold a small museum.
The coast and the Curonian Spit
A five-minute ferry crosses the lagoon to the Curonian Spit, where paths lead through the forest to dunes up to 60 meters high and the fishing village of Nida. North of the city, Melnragė and Giruliai have sandy beaches, and the resort of Palanga is half an hour away.
