Vaduz is one of the smallest capitals in Europe, a town of about 6,000 people. Its pedestrian center, the Städtle, holds the parliament, museums and cafés, while Vaduz Castle, home of the princely family, looks down from a ledge on the mountainside.

The Städtle

The Städtle, the car-free main street, is lined with modern art and sculpture. The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, a black cube of a building, displays modern and contemporary art, and the Postage Stamp Museum celebrates the country's famous stamps.

The neo-Gothic Cathedral of Saint Florin and the government building with its red-and-white tiled roof stand nearby, and a little tourist train tours the town in summer.

The castle and the valley

A footpath climbs from the center to Vaduz Castle, which is not open to the public but offers a view over the Rhine valley to the Swiss mountains. The princely vineyards below the castle produce wine you can taste in the town.

Liechtenstein has no airport or main railway line; buses connect Vaduz with the Swiss town of Sargans and the Austrian town of Feldkirch.
