Jūrmala is a string of seaside villages along a 30-kilometer sandy beach between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe river. Since the 19th century it has been the Baltic's favorite resort, famous for its pine forests, spa hotels and hundreds of carved wooden villas.
Majori and Jomas Street
The heart of Jūrmala is Majori, where the pedestrian Jomas Street runs parallel to the beach, lined with cafés, shops and old wooden houses. A few steps through the pines lead to the white sand and shallow water of the Baltic.
More than 400 wooden buildings in Jūrmala are protected as architectural monuments, from simple summer cottages to elaborate villas with towers, verandas and lacy Art Nouveau decoration.
Practical tips
Trains from Riga run to Majori and other stops along the coast in about 30 minutes. The beach season is short, from June to August, but the forest walks, spa hotels and quiet beach are lovely in spring and autumn too.
