Kobe is squeezed between the Rokko Mountains and Osaka Bay, which gives it a long, narrow shape and stunning views from almost every hill. One of Japan's first ports opened to foreign trade in 1868, it has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, elegant neighborhoods and, of course, its world-famous beef.

Harborland and the waterfront

The Meriken Park and Harborland area is Kobe's showpiece waterfront. The red lattice Kobe Port Tower, the white wave-shaped roof of the Kobe Maritime Museum and the BE KOBE monument are favorite photo spots, and at night the reflections of the lights on the water are beautiful, especially from the Mosaic shopping area.

Meriken Park also contains the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park, where a section of the damaged quay has been preserved as a reminder of the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, after which the city was rebuilt.

Sannomiya, Chinatown and Kitano

Sannomiya and Motomachi form the commercial center, with covered shopping streets and department stores. Between them lies Nankinmachi, Kobe's compact Chinatown, full of street food stalls selling steamed buns and dumplings.

Uphill to the north, the Kitano district preserves the 'Ijinkan', Western-style houses built by foreign merchants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, some open as museums. For one of Japan's best night views, take the ropeway or a car up Mount Rokko or Mount Maya.

Day trips

Kobe is just 20 minutes by train from Osaka. The hot spring town of Arima Onsen, one of the oldest in Japan, lies behind the mountains, and Himeji Castle, Japan's most famous original castle, is about 40 minutes away.
