Pucón, on Lake Villarrica in the Chilean Lake District, is an adventure capital beneath the active Villarrica Volcano, which can be climbed to look into its crater.

The town

The town has wooden buildings, shops and a black sand beach on the lake. Adventure agencies offer rafting, kayaking and canopy tours.

Volcano and hot springs

The Villarrica Volcano climb is a full-day adventure. Afterwards, the Termas Geométricas hot springs, with red wooden walkways, are a perfect place to relax.

A day in Pucón

Climb the Villarrica Volcano with a guide, a full-day hike on snow and ice to the crater rim, where you can see smoke and sometimes lava. On the way down, guides often slide down the snow on small sleds.

Afterward, relax in a hot spring, such as Termas Geométricas, with its red boardwalks through a fern-filled canyon.

Good to know

The volcano climb depends on the weather and volcanic activity, so be flexible. Huerquehue National Park offers hikes to lakes and ancient araucaria trees.

Pucón is busy in January and February.

Why it is so popular

Pucón lies in the Araucanía region, the heartland of the Mapuche people, whose culture is visible in crafts, food and place names. The region is a land of lakes, rivers, forests and volcanoes, and in summer Pucón becomes Chile's adventure capital, with rafting on the Trancura River, canyoning, zip lines and horseback riding. In winter, the slopes of Villarrica become a ski area with views over the lake.

The black sand beach of La Poza and the Playa Grande on Lake Villarrica are crowded with families in January and February, while spring and autumn are quieter and very green.
