Foz do Iguaçu, in southern Brazil, is the gateway to the Iguaçu Falls, one of the largest waterfall systems in the world, where the Iguaçu River plunges over 275 separate falls on the border with Argentina.

The falls

On the Brazilian side, a trail through Iguaçu National Park offers panoramic views, ending at a walkway that leads into the spray near the Devil's Throat. Boat trips go right under the falls.

Around the city

The Itaipu Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world. Parque das Aves is a bird park with toucans and macaws. The Triple Frontier marks where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet.

Seeing the falls

On the Brazilian side, a path leads along the canyon to a walkway over the water with a full view of the Devil's Throat. Arrive early for fewer crowds.

Spend another day on the Argentine side, where trails take you close to the top of the falls. The Macuco Safari boat ride goes right under the waterfalls.

Good to know

The falls are impressive all year, but they are fullest after the rains, from December to March. Bring a raincoat.

The Itaipu Dam, one of the largest in the world, and the Parque das Aves bird park are near the falls.

Planning your visit

Seeing both sides takes at least two days. The Brazilian side gives the panorama, while the Argentine side, with longer trails and a little train, brings you face to face with the Devil's Throat. Remember your passport for the border crossing. The coatis that roam the parks look friendly but can bite and steal food, so keep snacks hidden. In the evenings, the Triple Frontier landmark shows where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet.
