Andorra la Vella lies at about 1,023 meters in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains. Its long shopping avenues, full of tax-free stores, merge with the neighboring town of Escaldes-Engordany, while its small old quarter keeps the stone buildings of the principality's past.

The old quarter

The Barri Antic, the old quarter, holds Casa de la Vall, a 16th-century stone house that served as Andorra's parliament for centuries, and the Romanesque Church of Sant Esteve. The Plaça del Poble, a square on the roof of a government building, looks out over the valley.

Shopping, spas and mountains

Avinguda Meritxell and its continuation in Escaldes form one of the longest shopping streets in the Pyrenees. In Escaldes, Caldea, a glass spire rising above a thermal spa, uses the area's natural hot springs.

In winter the ski areas of Grandvalira and Vallnord-Pal Arinsal attract skiers from all over Europe, while summer brings hikers to the lakes and valleys. Andorra has no airport or train station; buses run from Barcelona and Toulouse.
